The Establishment of IFA
Written by Admin
Saturday, 07 July 2007 09:54

Initiatives for All (IFA) organization was founded by Cynthia Olmedo in April of 2007 to assist potential college students, regardless of age, income, or ethnicity, to navigate through the mazes of getting into college.

The idea for IFA was inspired by her husband, Eduardo Olmedo.  He grew up in southeast Houston and attended Jackson Middle School and Stephen F. Austin High School.  He proved himself to be very bright and earned his way into the magnet program.  However, peers and his social circle did not support his academic aspirations.  He later tried to attend Charles H. Milby, Jones, and ended up enrolled at George I. Sanchez High School in 1993.  About a year later he dropped out of high school to work full-time and help support his family.

Day after day he watched the attorneys and other professionals working in the Chevron tower downtown as he cleaned the building, knowing he had the potential to do more.  He enrolled in GED classes at G.I. Sanchez and after passing the test was recruited to be part of the Americorps' National Service program.  In 1995, Eduardo and Cynthia met while teaching English-as-a-Second Language (ESL), Citizenship, and GED classes at AAMA-Adelante. After completing a year of community service they were granted an educational award and were encouraged to enroll at Houston Community College-Southeast Campus.  Both were accepted to Texas A&M University and the University of Houston-Central. Eduardo earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Cynthia earned her Bachelor of Science degree and later her MBA in 2007. Currently, Eduardo is working for Harris County Juvenile Probation Department and Cynthia is an Employment Counselor for the Texas Workforce Commission.

Although, their academic challenges and support systems differed. Without programs like Americorps', organizations like AAMA, and mentors to offer motivation, the future may not have been what it is today. IFA inspires "high-risk" students, high school drop-outs,and non-traditional adult students to return to school and pursue a college degree.

IFA takes pride in attending community youth events and listening to student needs’. It has come to our attention that students writing college entrance and competitive scholarship essays would greatly benefit from having someone to proofread their work before submission.

Beginning March 16, 2009, IFA will provide a free proofreading service for essays that meet the eligible criteria.

The criteria includes: · Essays must be completed to gain entrance into an institution leading to a college degree.

· Essays must be completed as part of a scholarship application to attend an accredited college institution.

Proofreading will consist of spelling and grammatical errors. Feedback on content will also be provided.

Services will be conducted by Jennifer D. Torres.

If you would like to have an essay proofread, please email attachment to jtorres.ifa@gmail.com with
(1) the purpose of the essay,
(2) the subject, and
(3) the deadline date for submission.

*Please allow five days for proofreading services. IFA can not guarantee service with less than 24 hour notice.
